Piedmont Community Amenities
Piedmont real estate truly offers a range of amenities for residents to enjoy. Within Piedmont's 1.8 square-mile area there are five city parks and a recreation center with tennis courts and a swimming pool. Numerous landscaped areas offer wooded paths to quiet pocket parks and children's playgrounds.
In 1852, Walter Blair bought 600 acres from the Peralta family for $1.25 per acre. Walter Blair was an enterprising man. He built a dairy on Highland Avenue and started a quarry where Dracena Park is now and sold the stones to the city of Oakland to pave the streets. He also built a hotel in Piedmont Park and a 75 acre amusement park in Moraga Canyon. Visitors from Oakland traveled 25 minutes by horse and buggy uphill to visit this grand outdoor arena. At the park you could sail small boats, ride ponies, watch acrobats hang from hot air balloons, have a picnic by one of the waterfalls and listen to music.
As the late 1800's came to a close, there were only seven homes in the area. That dramatically changed following the aftermath of the powerful 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Thousands fled across the bay to safety and many never returned. Piedmont grew 10 times bigger in just one year. By the Roaring Twenties, Piedmont was known as the 'City of Millionaires' because there were more millionaires per square mile than any other city in the United States.
