Piedmont Community Amenities

Living within the Piedmont real estate market truly provides a range of amenities for residents to enjoy. Within Piedmont's 1.8 square-mile area there are five city parks and a recreation center with tennis courts and a swimming pool. Numerous landscaped areas offer wooded paths to quiet pocket parks and children's playgrounds. 

Piedmont History

In 1852, Walter Blair bought 600 acres from the Peralta family for $1.25 per acre. Walter Blair was an enterprising man. He built a dairy on Highland Avenue and started a quarry where Dracena Park is now and sold the stones to the city of Oakland to pave the streets. He also built a hotel in Piedmont Park and a 75 acre amusement park in Moraga Canyon. Visitors from Oakland traveled 25 minutes by horse and buggy uphill to visit this grand outdoor arena. At the park you could sail small boats, ride ponies, watch acrobats hang from hot air balloons, have a picnic by one of the waterfalls and listen to music.

As the late 1800's came to a close, there were only seven homes in the area. That dramatically changed following the aftermath of the powerful 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Thousands fled across the bay to safety and many never returned. Piedmont grew 10 times bigger in just one year. By the Roaring Twenties, Piedmont was known as the 'City of Millionaires' because there were more millionaires per square mile than any other city in the United States.

Piedmont Real Estate

Today, Piedmont is still one of the wealthiest per capita areas in the U.S. However even with this statistic, you’ll feel a sense of welcome and community in Piedmont. There's an old-fashioned Fourth of July Parade with floats, kids riding decorated bicycles and a marching band. Every Thanksgiving brings the 5k Turkey Trot to benefit the Piedmont High School cross country team. Tour tranquil Piedmont and you'll see grand century old mansions as well as Craftsman style and sleek mid-century homes.

Piedmont Schools

Piedmont Unified School District is ranked #1 in Northern California and #4 in the state according to the 2015 Academic Performance Index (API). There are three elementary schools, one middle school and two high schools. It's also worth noting that Dave Higgins is an active sponsor of the schools in Piedmont and can provide excellent advice on which school might be best for certain families to live near.

Piedmont Transportation

Public transportation options abound in Piedmont. Four AC Transit lines travel to San Francisco, local BART stations and downtown Oakland. There are five BART stations that serve San Francisco, the South Bay and Contra Costa County. Lastly, there are two casual carpool pickup locations for a more personalized commute to San Francisco.

Piedmont Shopping

Fantastic shopping is a short drive to the Bay Street Emeryville shopping center. The Apple Store, J. Crew, Sephora and more are there. You’ll find unique boutiques for clothing and gifts along Lakeshore/Grand Avenues and Montclair Village less than a mile from Piedmont.
