Explore the Lake Merritt Real Estate Market
Lake Merritt real estate includes several communities around the lake beginning with the Cleveland Heights neighborhood on the northeast section, south of the MacArthur Freeway. Condos start at approximately $280,000 for three bedrooms and 1.5 baths. Homes are approximately $675,000 for 1,300 square feet to over one million dollars for more than 3,000 square feet and five bedrooms. Lake Merritt homes for sale and condos available in this rolling hillside area are likely to have lake and Bay views.
The Adam's Point section is popular with young professionals. It is at the north end of the lake next to Lakeside Park with easy walking and biking to the lake. This is an area of luxury condos in the $300,000 to $600,000 range. Both of these areas are part of the Grand and Lakeshore district, considered the crossroads of Oakland. Condos are located in most areas around the lake shore. The area south and west of the lake is downtown Oakland.
Lake Merritt Parks
Enjoy a cruise of Lake Merritt on a genuine Venetian gondola. The Gondola Servicio is located at the historic boathouse next to the Lake Chalet restaurant. The gondolas have been cruising the lake since 1999. Although each gondola can hold up to six passengers, romantic rides are usually scheduled for couples. There are packages with wine and cheese, chocolate and other amenities for a romantic afternoon or evening ride across the lake.
Lake Merritt real estate includes the popular Children's Fairyland located at the north end of the lake in the Lakeside Park area. This park has been an inspiration to children since 1950. It features storybook sets, rides for small children and special performances at the Storybook Puppet Theater. Live animals are on display. It's a place for birthday parties and special outings for children of all ages although it is designed especially for children under eight years old.
The Gardens at Lake Merritt is a park area next to Children's Fairyland with a seven-acre collection of themed gardens. This includes a Japanese Garden, Bonsai, Mediterranean, Bay Friendly trees and plants along with an edibles garden. The Autumn Lights Festival is an annual event.
The Palm Society of Northern California has the Lakeside Park Palmetum next to the gardens with various species of palms that grow in this region. Splash Pad Park is located at the far northeast corner of the lake and Paralta Park is located at the south end. Smaller parks dot the shoreline at various locations.
Lake Merritt Community Highlights
- Alameda County Transit serves Oakland residents including the Lake Merritt area with lines 13, 18 and 26. This includes connections to BART.
- Oakland Medical Center, a division of Kaiser-Permanente, is a major health-care provider located near Lake Merritt
- This area includes several private schools and a university specializing in the growing field of health sciences
- Oakland's Grand Lake Farmers Market is a Saturday morning institution in the East Bay
